The Competition

The competition is judged in two stages:

  • First Round Judging: PSAs are judged based on votes. PSAs that receive a majority of votes will advance to the Final Judging stage.

  • Final awards: The best of the best from all poster PSAs submitted are honored at the annual Red Carpet Streets, Art, SAFE Awards Ceremony.

How the Awards Work:

The overall top winners of the competition are honored at the live red-carpet Streets, Art, SAFE Awards Ceremony (SAS Awards), which is open to all participating schools.

Students who submitted PSAs for final judging are presented with a certificate acknowledging the accomplishment of their creative endeavor and congratulating them for being a finalist.

The Grand Prize-winning teams and Special Awards Category-winning teams, including the sponsoring teacher, are acknowledged with a special trophy and grants for the school’s Art Department and/or awards to the student teams themselves.

Technical Awards and Best PSA Awards are acknowledged with trophies.

Trophies are awarded by judges, celebrities, and civic leaders in the following categories:

FILM COMPETITION AWARDS:

Technical Awards
Based on results of judging done by the Film Industry Judges

  1. Creativity and Originality
    Including best use of a category of PSA: reenactment, testimonial, celebrity, satire.

  2. Cinematography
    Camerawork and lighting.

  3. Acting

  4. Editing

  5. Production design
    Everything that appears in front of the camera - such as sets, props, costumes, location, make-up, etc.

  6. Sound
    Includessound effects, production audio, music, etc.

Best PSA Awards
Based on results of judging done by the Street Safety Judges

  1. Research

  2. Most effective street safety message:
    A PSA should leave a memorable lasting impression on the audience through its message. Thus judges will be looking at the strength of your messaging, including use of a tagline, jingle, or other similar solutions.

    a. Best Distracted Driving PSA

    b. Best Driving Under The Influence PSA

    c. Best Safe Driving PSA

    d. Best Cycling or Skating Safety PSA
    e. Best E-Mobility Safety PSA (Includes legal e-bikes, e-scoters, illegal electric motorcycles.)
    f. Best Pedestrian Safety PSA (includes traveling on foot, by wheelchair, or with other mobility aids.)

  3. Best Encouragement PSA

Optional Awards

  1. Funniest

  2. Scariest

  3. Animation

  4. Visual Effects and/or Special Effects

  5. Best Testimonial PSA
    (    Uses victims, or an actor portraying a victim, of the undesired behavior to speak about an issue.)

  6. Best Satire PSA
    (    The art of making bad behavior look ridiculous through an exaggerated story.)

Special Awards Categories
Students may submit additional PSAs to compete in the following categories if they wish.

  1. The Street Racing Kills Award

  2. E-Bike Safety Special Award Category - Your message may address any aspect of riding safely, preventing crashes, or encouraging responsible behavior by e-bike riders.

  3. Encouragement Message Special Award Category - Encourage people to choose walking, biking, or public transit. Select one mode of transportation and develop a message that inspires others to use it. Your PSA may focus on everyday travel or on getting to and from school.

  1. Best Overall PSA Bronze Winner

  2. Best Overall PSA Silver Winner

  3. Best Overall PSA Gold Winner
