ABOUT
What is the Streets, Art, SAFE Film Competition?
The Streets, Art, SAFE Film Competition is a program for high school students to advocate for street safety through the arts, created by the non-profit organization Streets Are For Everyone (SAFE) who aims to improve the quality of life for pedestrians, bicyclists, and drivers alike by reducing traffic fatalities to zero.
In Los Angeles, traffic collisions are the #1 killer of our youth, ages 5 - 14. Traffic violence is a situation extending beyond Los Angeles, with California having the highest rate of pedestrian deaths on its roadways than any other state. This program aims to educate and empower students to do something about it through creative, fun, artistic, and impactful visual storytelling, while also developing film and visual arts expertise.
Creativity and Change Through Public Service Announcements
Public Service Announcements (PSAs) use the power of communication to raise awareness on important issues needing a change in our society. They are a fun, creative, educational, and informative way to bring about that change.
The Streets, Art, SAFE Film Competition tasks high school students to research a traffic safety issue, of their choice, and produce a PSA about what they learned. The purpose of this program is two-fold:
Create awareness of traffic safety importance for our young adults, giving them the outlet of artistic expression to teach others about traffic safety.
Foster artistic creativity, allowing students to develop expertise in visual storytelling.

Supporting Teachers and Mentoring Students
Making a Public Service Announcement (PSA) is no small task. And the challenge is precisely what makes this competition fun and exciting! To help participating students understand the assignment, SAFE provides:
A complete Educator’s Guide with pre-made lesson plans, to help teachers educate and walk their students through the process of researching traffic safety topics as well as all stages of making a PSA. It does not have to be done in sequence and chapters can be used as needed for the students.
A list of 13 PSA topics to choose from.
Free resources and workshops students can attend to learn more about specific aspects of traffic safety or filmmaking (we call these “Opportunities”.)
Industry experts that are available to mentor students. This mentoring includes guidance on areas of potential improvement on scripts, storyboards, rough edits, and ultimately, their finished Public Service Announcements. This is optional, but many students have found it helpful in making winning PSAs. Submit for Mentoring here.

New Awards and Prizes for 2023/24!
Due to expansion of the Streets, Art, SAFE Film Competition, the 2023/24 year sees additional awards opportunities being launched!
The competition will now be judged in two stages with awards given at each stage:
A regional contest, with PSAs judged and awarded by region in each category.
All regional winning PSAs are then automatically entered into the main awards festival and judged for the top prizes in each category at the annual Streets, Art, SAFE Red Carpet Awards Ceremony.
Awards and Prizes have now doubled with $7500 available to be won!
Thanks to a generous contribution from Honda, the Grand Prize this year has doubled, with both a grant being awarded to the winning school’s Art Department as well as funds directly to the winning student teams.
Special Awards Categories are back!
Due to popular demand last year, we again have two Special Awards Categories - both with their own cash prizes:
the Street Racing Kills Special Award
the Cycling Safety Special Award.
Any school or student team is eligible to submit for these awards. This means that student teams can have up to 3 PSAs submitted if they want:
their original registered PSA,
a PSA for the Street Racing Kills Special Award and
a PSA for the Cycling Safety Special Award.

Street Racing Kills Supports the Streets, Art, SAFE Film Competition
Lili Trujillo Puckett founded Street Racing Kills (SRK) in 2014 after her 16-year-old daughter Valentina was killed by a young man who was street racing and crashed while giving her a ride home. She knew then that her daughter’s death would not be in vain and would do everything she could to prevent another parent from losing a child. Her life changed forever that day. With Valentina by her side in spirit, her mission was born; to save lives by mentoring and creating awareness among the youth.
