Early this month, the INVEST in America Act passed the House!
What is the INVEST in America Act? This federal bill allows and programs $494 billion in transportation funding over the next 5 years. Part of this is dedicatiing about 7 billion to alternative transportation efforts, including biking and walking.
The plan also includes a 60 percent increase of funding to the Transportation Alternatives Program (TAP), which provides federal funds for biking and walking.
Even more exciting? Congress did not state how the money should be spent federally and how each state can spend their share of the federal pot. Meaning the possibility of California getting some much needed funding to expand existing Complete Streets programs and other initiatives in cycling and walking safety.
At this time, it is unclear whether this bill will be passed through the next steps this year or next, but we will definitely keep our followers informed!

Another interesting advancement is the Bicycle Commuter Act that is pending in Congress. This important piece of legislation allows commuters to exercise a pre-tax benefit to cover the cost of a commute to work by bicycle, and gives those commuters flexibility in applying the Commuter Tax Benefit to multiple modes.
Stay tuned for updates on both these pieces of legislation...
