We did it!!!!

Thank you again to everyone who called Assemblymember Lori Wilson’s office last week to get The Safer Streets Act on the agenda to be heard in the Assembly Transportation Committee this past Monday.

I spent the week in Sacramento campaigning for this and other road safety-related bills. It was a busy and productive week!

But here’s the news you’ve been waiting for…
Senate Bill 720 – The Safer Streets Act – passed both the Assembly Transportation Committee with a unanimous 15–0 vote, and the Committee on Privacy and Consumer Protection with strong bipartisan support and a 13–2 vote!

So again—thank you. We are a strong, united team, and I truly appreciate you.

I also wanted to (finally!) update you on our successful high school education program, Streets, Art, SAFE, which wrapped up its ninth year this past May with incredible results.

The Safer Streets Act Passes
Two Major Hurdles!

Thanks to your help, Senate Bill 720 advances with strong support, aiming to modernize California’s red light camera law. The bill prioritizes safety, privacy, and equity by removing facial ID requirements, introducing fairer fines, and ensuring funds are used for safer streets—not profit.

Our Famous Streets, Art, SAFE Program Does it Again!

This year, one of SAFE’s most celebrated educational programs returned for its 9th year! Known for showcasing Public Service Announcement (PSA) short films by high school students from across California and other States— it returned with a powerful twist.

Traditionally focused on youth-made PSA films that explore traffic safety topics, this year’s edition introduced something new: original poster designs. The addition expanded the creative scope of the event and gave students a fresh way to raise their voices—and their visuals—on what safe streets should look like for pedestrians, cyclists, and drivers alike.

It also launched “encouragement categories”—topics focused on riding a bike, walking, or taking transit. These modes of transportation, in and of themselves, help create safer streets.

Transform LA: Small Steps, Big Impact!

• Sign On to the Long Beach Letter Addressing Road Safety
  Advocates are pushing for Long Beach to move forward with its speed systems program to implement as soon as possible. Add your name to the letter as a show of support.

• Attend An Upcoming Metro Community Meeting on NoHo to Pasadena Bus Rapid Transit Project

  Metro invites you to attend Community Meetings to share your feedback about the latest design progress and learn more. Attend an upcoming in-person meeting scheduled throughout July.

• Fill Out Glendale’s Citywide Traffic and Mobility Study

  If you live or move through Glendale, provide your input to their mobility study to improve how people move around the city.

• Help Improve Transportation Access With the Spring and Alameda Street Safety and Mobility Project Community Survey
  Take part in efforts to improve mobility along Spring and Alameda by providing feedback on issues like transportation access and safety. Completed survey submissions will be entered into a drawing for a chance to receive a $50 gift card.

• Provide Your Input on Metro’s Sepulveda Transit Corridor Project
  Metro is considering transit options to make it easier to get between the San Fernando Valley and the Westside. Attend an upcoming meeting or provide comments on the project. You can also learn more about the various Alternatives in this YouTube Video.

LaToy Allen has proven to be one of the most dedicated and dependable volunteers here at SAFE. No matter how busy her schedule gets, LaToy always finds a way to show up and support our work. From helping break down the Streets, Art, SAFE ceremony at the end of a long day, to handing out medals at Finish The Ride, or passing out flyers to promote upcoming events, LaToy is always ready to lend a hand. Her consistency, positivity, and reliability make her an invaluable part of the team.

Originally from the East Coast, LaToy has become a beloved member of the SAFE family, bringing energy and heart to every event she joins. She’s known for arriving with a big smile and contagious enthusiasm—and often brings her children and their cousins along to help out, turning volunteering into a joyful family affair. Her passion for our mission and community spirit shine through in everything she does, and we’re so grateful to have her in our corner.
