VICTORY!!! Today, we celebrate because we have successfully created change.

Thanks to grassroots action by SAFE, you as volunteers, and our advocacy partners—LA Walks, Bike LA, SAFE Families, Streets For All, Move LA, People for Mobility Justice, SoCal Families for Safe Streets, and more—the LA City Council voted to restore 127 critical positions at LA DOT in the city budget—positions that literally save lives. It's a huge win for everyone who walks, bikes, or rolls in our city. More about this below.

Lets Clean Some Bike Lanes!!! Tomorrow, our Clean Ride Crew is back in action—this time on Forest Lawn Drive at 9:30 AM. If you’re free, come lend a hand to clean up the bike lane and make it SAFE!

Ongoing Advocacy Efforts

LA City Budget

On April 21, Mayor Bass released the proposed budget for the next fiscal year, including over 1,000 job cuts, many of which targeted roles essential to keeping our roads safe.

SAFE and a coalition of dedicated nonprofits refused to stay silent. We mobilized, spoke out, and made it clear: cutting road safety means cutting lives short.

We organized a powerful Die-In on the steps of City Hall (check out this die-in video highlight) to spotlight the deadly conditions on LA’s streets for pedestrians, cyclists, and drivers. In the very year Vision Zero was supposed to bring traffic deaths to zero, we were being asked to accept cuts to safety measures, making it impossible to even paint a crosswalk or add a single mile of bike lane within a year.

But our voices were heard.

Yesterday, the LA City Council voted 12–3 in favor of a revised budget that restores many of the proposed cuts:

✅ Restores critical jobs, including positions at LADOT that are vital to protecting pedestrian lives.

✅ Allows for the continuation of essential programs like Vision Zero and Safe Routes to Schools — programs that help keep our streets safe.

This is a win worth celebrating, but our fight for safer streets is far from over. We’ll keep pushing for a city where no one has to risk their life just to get where they’re going—whether they walk, bike, drive, or roll.

Join LA Metro for Sepulveda Transit Corridor Virtual and In‐Person Community Meetings on May 21, 27, 28, 29 and 31st!

Metro has a plan to make it easier to get around. The natural barrier created by the Santa Monica Mountains makes traveling between the Valley and the Westside extremely difficult and slow. In fact, it’s one of the most congested corridors in the country, and transit is limited. Solving this challenge will require innovation and multiple solutions. Metro is working to evaluate alternatives for a high-quality, reliable transit service option connecting the San Fernando Valley and the Westside.
