I feel like we’re stuck in a bad reality TV show. As if the LA fires, trade war, and continuing conflicts and wars around the world weren’t enough bad news, now, closer to home, the LA Mayor has proposed a budget that would essentially eliminate the positions and funding needed to do any sort of traffic safety work. This comes after the second year in a row of more traffic fatalities than homicides in Los Angeles — and with only three years to go before the 2028 Olympics.

Frankly, I’m mad. I know hard cuts will have to be made, but there’s SO much about this proposed LA City budget that is fiscally irresponsible. It seems to be political showboating, and I question the true intentions of those responsible for proposing it.

This is going to be a hard fight, which is why I’m personally asking you to help us prevent yet another disaster from befalling the City of Angels by dismantling road safety efforts now and in the years ahead. It will only lead to more traffic fatalities, more serious injuries, and greater costs to the city in lawsuits and already strained resources.

PLEASE sign the petition below, join us at Wednesday’s Die-In protest, make your voice heard with your City Councilmember, and, at the very least, donate to support this effort.

Urgent Call to Action - Protest this Wednesday!
LA’s proposed budget cuts threaten public safety.

SAFE, along with a coalition of non-profits and road safety advocates, will be hosting a die-in* on the steps of LA City Hall to raise awareness of LA’s dystopian-level budget cuts.

The “DOGE”-like budget cuts that would gut LADOT’s ability to make streets safer.

If these cuts go through, there will be no funding for new safety improvements — no speed reduction measures, no protected bike lanes, no pedestrian upgrades. Nothing.

We again need to raise our voices and let Mayor Bass and our City Council know that the issue of traffic violence needs to be treated as the public health crisis that it is.

We have very little time to get changes made before the budget it finalized.

In 2013, I was hit by a car while riding my bike through Griffith Park — dragged a quarter-mile down the 5 Freeway, losing my right leg and nearly my life. Two years later, Los Angeles leaders announced a bold Vision Zero goal: to eliminate traffic deaths by 2025. But nearly a decade later, traffic violence has only gotten worse.

Through Streets Are For Everyone, I’ve made it my mission to prevent tragedies like mine. Despite promises of safer streets, too many Angelenos are still being killed or seriously injured just trying to walk, bike, or drive across their own neighborhoods.

Now, instead of stepping up, the City is about to make things even more dangerous.

Streets, Art, SAFE is a fun and creative program that educates high school students about traffic safety through the arts - film, posters, and visual storytelling.

We invite you to join us in making the 2025 Streets, Art, SAFE annual awards ceremony an unforgettable day for hundreds of student artists and filmmakers!
