Yesterday was the 3rd anniversary of Andrew Jelmert's tragic passing after he was hit from behind while riding his bicycle in Griffith Park.

At SAFE, we paused for a moment to remember and think about not only his passing but also the 179 other cyclists who have been hit and killed since Vision Zero started in 2015. 

It's been three years! There’s $4 million sitting in City bank accounts—earmarked specifically to improve safety in Griffith Park—and it continues to sit unused, saving no lives. The plans have been complete for nearly two years. A construction firm was even approved to begin work in August 2024.

And yet, everything remains stalled—tied up in red tape.

PLEASE join me on Saturday to both remember and voice our upset.

Three years is too long! I want a Griffith Park that's safe for the community, not a high-speed cut-through for commuters. And I know you do too.

Griffith Park Call to Action

It's been 3 years since Andrew was killed in a hit-and-run crash while biking for charity, and we have yet to see the improvements on Crystal Springs Dr. that SAFE helped to get funded.

Join us on Saturday to honor the memory of cyclist Andrew Jelmert, who was struck and killed in Griffith Park, and help us demand action from the LA Parks department.

Remembering
We will hold a brief vigil in honor of Andrew Jelmert's memory and remembrance of cyclists who have been killed in LA due to traffic violence. Three white doves will be released acknowledging the years since Andrew's death. 

Griffith Park Advocacy Ride
We will then go on a leisurely no-drop ride through Griffith Park, stopping at various locations where improvements are planned and funded -- new bike lanes, safer pedestrians crossings, etc.

Demand
We will finish by holding a protest near the Riverside Dr. entrance to continue calling attention to the needs for a safer Griffith Park.

Transform LA: Small Steps, Big Impact!

• Join Long Beach Advocates at City Council to Demand Action to Slow Speeding Drivers
  On April 22, partner organizations Car-Lite Long Beach and Bike Long Beach will be speaking at the City of Long Beach council meeting to demand that they implement speed cameras to ticket drivers traveling at dangerous speeds through Long Beach. • Provide Input on Glendale’s Speed Safety Program

  Glendale is one of four SoCal cities that SAFE helped get approved for speed enforcement cameras to reduce traffic violence. Take the survey to help determine the nine best locations to implement this life-saving tool.

• Free Rides on LADOT and LA Metro Transit this Earth Day

  For this year’s Earth Day, rides on all LADOT transit services, Metrolink, and LA Metro will be free on Tuesday, April 22, 2025. Take advantage of the opportunity to travel sustainably throughout the city!

• Submit Feedback on the San Gabriel Valley Greenway Network Draft.
  The SGV Greenway Network's Draft Strategic Implementation Plan is available for public review and comment. The plan covers strategies to create a modernized network of bicycle and pedestrian pathways. Visit the SGV Greenway Network Website and click "Submit a Public Comment" to share your thoughts by April 26.

• Give Your Input on Caltrans’ Plan to Extend Lincoln Blvd. Bus Lanes
  Caltrans is proposing an extension to the Lincoln Blvd. bus lanes, which would take you almost all the way to LAX. Take the survey anytime before May 7, to determine the need for extended accessible transportation.

• Weigh in on Planned PCH Safety Improvements

  Caltrans’ next virtual meeting to discuss the pavement and improvement projects for PCH is on Monday, May 12 from 1 to 3 p.m.. Please attend and make your voice heard to ensure safety is built into PCH now!

• Get involved in the LA Parks Needs Assessment!

  LA Recs and Parks launched a survey to determine priority and future investments for park management. Take the survey to be involved in the process! The survey is open through mid April.
