Another city joins the ranks of bike friendly cities. Bike lanes are finally coming to Long Beach!
Construction began early this month on another east-west bike boulevard in East Long Beach on 6th Street. The project will stretch for 2.5 miles starting at Bellflower Boulevard to Juniper Avenue moving west.
Also included in the project are 12 traffic circles and a round-about at 6th Street and Park Avenue. The Class I bike lane will include sensors at traffic signals.
Total cost for the project will be $1.5 million and is paid for through the California Safe Routes to School Grant, Measure R, AB2766 and the Transportation Development Act.
"Not only does a bike boulevard provide traffic calming measures and intersection crossing improvements, but it also facilitates interconnectivity among schools, parks and neighborhoods while providing an opportunity for street beautification," Third District Councilwoman Suzie Price said.
Hopefully other California cities will continue to follow suit with bike lanes and generally making their cities more friendly for all road users.
